Studied the Royal Academy of Music. Bandmaster of the Scots Fusiliers 1859-68. Bandmaster of the Royal Horse Guards 1868-1904. Professor of Military Music ay the Royal College of Music and at the Guildhall School. Adjudicator at the British Open Brass Band Championships in Manchester. Edited the Army Military Band Journal and founded the Orpheus Brass Band Journal.
