Commentary on the movements

Prima parte:

1. Chorus: Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes. A bipartite opening chorus, with a magnificent crescendo-like B section.
2. Recitativo (Tenor): So läßt sich Gott nicht unbezueget! Recitative with string accompaniment. a minor-e minor
3. Aria (Soprano): Hört, ihr Völker, Gottes Stimme. One of the longest movements in this cantata. Instead of Bach's typical melodic length in cantata, he here limits himself to a simple motive.
4. Recitativo (Bass): Wer aber hört. Secco recitative.
5. Aria (Bass): Fahr hin, abgöttische Zunft! As compared to the ascetic violin solo of the first aria, the red-blooded trumpets-and-oboes ensemble of this aria is a much richer sound, enhanced by the bass voice. Long melismas abound.
6. Recitativo (Alto): Du hast uns, Herr, von allen Straßen. Secco recitative.
7. Choral: Es woll uns Gott genädig sein. A choral setting with ornamentation from the instruments.

Seconda parte:

1. Sinfonia. An exotic-sounding movement, with oboe d'amore, viola da gamba, and continuo. The slow-fast movement of the sinfonia is reminiscent of a french overture.
2. Recitativo (Bass): Gott segne noch die treue Schar. Recitative with string acompaniment.
3. Aria (Tenor): Hasse nur, hasse mich recht. A continuo aria with ostinato bass.
4. Recitativo (Alto): Ich fühle schon im Geist. Secco recitative.
5. Aria (Alto): Liebt, ihr Christen, in der Tat! "A special gem of this cantata."¹ The obbligato instruments are those used in the sinfonia.
6. Recitativo (Tenor): So soll die Christenheit. Secco recitative.
7. Choral: Es danke, Gott, und lobe dich. A plain choral setting.
