Commentary on the movements

Parte prima:

  1. Chorus: Es ist dir gesagt, Mensch, was gut ist. A monothematic monolith of choral composition in several parts symmetrically organised. E major
  2. Recitativo (Tenor): Der Höchste läßt mich seinen Willen wissen. Secco recitative. B major-G minor
  3. Aria (Tenor): Weiß ich Gottes Rechte. A da capo aria missing the reprise with clear-cut rhythms and phrases that add a dance flavor. C minor

Parte seconda:

  1. Arioso (Bass): Es werden viele zu mir sagen an jenem Tage. The centrepiece of the work. The Bass has an impressive virtuosic part here, accompanied by rich strings. A major
  2. Aria (Alto): Wer Gott bekennt. Obbligato flute gives a more welcoming feel to the text, combined with the alto voice's smooth lines in comparison to the immense leaps of the previous movement. F minor
  3. Recitativo (Alto): So wird denn Herz und mund. Secco recitative. E major
  4. Choral: Gib, daß ich tu mit fleiß. A plain chorale setting. E major
