No.1 of Six pièces pour grand orgue. Four versions: (cataloguing numbers and references to each different version are confusing and differ among musicologists). Version I composed in 1856 for the organ of St. Michel at Carcassonne. Version II composed probably for the inauguration of the organ of St-Sulpice. Version III extracts from the two previous versions, reusing the beginning of Version I and the majority of Version II. This is the version that was published in 1868. It is unclear in the manuscript whether version II or Version III is dated to 1863 but in either case it was in its definitive form by 1868 at the latest. Version IV was composed in 1868 after the initial publication probably for the inauguration of the organ of Notre Dame de Paris and reuses the beginning of Version I (and III) with an alternate development and ending. The partial manuscript of the alternate passages are bound together in a printed copy of the initial publication.
