Section Listing

Parte Prima:

  1. Chorus: Herr, deine Augen sehen nach dem Glauben. "One of the great achievements of the mature Bach."1. The complex form of this movement is beyond the scope of this analysis, however its larger outline is a simple rondo shape in a larger ABA structure. The fugal structure is equally brilliant and complex. g minor
  2. Recitativo (Bass): Wo ist das Ebenbild, das Gott. Secco recitative. B Major
  3. Aria (Alto): Weh der Seele, die den Schaden."An aria whose gestures could hardly be surpassed for compelling effect."1 The intense dissonances of this movement, combined with the oft-used pathetic character of the baroque oboe give this movement an incredible illustration of the text. f minor
  4. Arioso (Bass): Verachtest du den Reichtum seiner. Practically speaking a da capo aria with strings, the music here takes precedence over the text; perhaps it is a parody movement. E Major

Parte Seconda:

  1. (No. 5) Aria (Tenor): Erschrecke doch. Obbligato flute (or violino piccolo) accompanies a lively aria with many fast passages with wide ranges. g minor
  2. (No. 6) Recitativo (Alto): Bei Warten ist Gefahr. Recitative with two oboes. c minor-G Major
  3. (No. 7) Choral: Heut lebst du, heut bekehre dich. A plain chorale setting. c minor
