History

Founded in 1810 by Pierre-Honoré Janet (d.1832) and Alexandre Cotelle (1786-1858). Janet learned the publishing trade via apprenticeship with his father Pierre-Etienne Janet (1746–1830) and his purchase of the music section his father's firm formed the basis of the new enterprise. Richault's first known address was 7 Rue Grange Bateliere. Richault moved his premises to 16 Boulevard Poissoniere between 1823 and 1825, with a shift (or perhaps a re-numbering) to 26 Boulevard Poissoniere in 1841. Richault acquired the publishing firm of J.J. Frey in 1839(?). Richault's imprint was the owner's name (Simon Richault) until 1866. After the founder's death it was changed by his son Guillaume Simon (1806–1877) to Richault et Cie. (1866-1893). After Guillaume's death when his son Léon (1839–1895) took over the business it is possible that some use was made of the imprint Richault fils et Cie. between 1878 and 1893. Lastly, it became Veuve (Vve.) Richault Mere (1893-1898). The firm was sold to Costallat in June, 1898.
