Johann Ulrich Haffner

History

Founded in 1742 by lutenist and publisher Johann Ulrich Haffner (1711-1767) in Nürnberg (Nuremberg). Run jointly with engraver J. W. Windter (Windtner) until 1745.
Published around 150 works up to 1767, mainly keyboard and chamber music of mid and south German as well as Italian composers. His keyboard collections were famous: the 12 parts of the Oeuvres mêlées (1755-65) and the 5 books of the Raccolta musicale (1756-65). Publishing primarily first editions, with high quality paper and engraving (mostly by J. W. Stör), Haffner was highly rated as a publisher among musicians and composers. After his death (22 October 1767) the business was eventually passed on to art dealer and engraver A. W. Winterschmidt in 1770, and to the latter's son Johann Jacob W. in 1786.

Almost all imprints carry a plate number in Roman numerals; few are dated. One exception to both of these is the second edition of Mattheson's Die wol-klingende Finger-Sprache, dated 1749.
