Commentary on the movements

Titles in parentheses are for BWV 69a

  1. Chorus: Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele. Calling for an instrumentation comparable to that of the Christmas Oratorio, this movement fully utilises that exceptional orchestrational potential.
The centerpiece of the movement is the double fugue on the same lyrics.
  2. Recitativo (Soprano): Wie groß ist Gottes Güte doch! (=Ach, daß ich tausend Zungen hätte!) Secco recitative.
  3. Aria (Tenor): Meine Seele, Auf! erzähle. The movement flows in 9/8, using the pastoral sounds of oboe da caccia and recorder to great advantage.
  4. Recitativo (Alto): Der herr had große Ding an uns getan (=Gedenk ich nur zurück). Secco recitative.
  5. Aria (Bass): Mein Erlöser und Erhalter. A "powerfully and energetically rythmical" aria for Bass and oboe d'amore obbligato1.
  6. Chorale: Es danke, Gott, und lobe dich (=Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan, darbei will ich verbleiben). A plain chorale setting.

Version History

  1. August 15, 1723 (12th Sunday after Trinity): Sacred cantata BWV 69a.
  2. August 26, 1748 (Council Elections): Current version. Changes include the text (mainly recitatival changes), and a new chorale at the end.
