Commentary on the movements

  1. Aria (Alto, Tenor): O Ewigkiet, du Donnerwort. A Chorale arrangement for alto (doubled with horn throughout) and tenor providing a countermelody.
  2. Recitativo (Alto, Tenor): O schwerer Gang zum letzen Kampf und Streite! Secco recitative.
  3. Aria (Alto, Tenor): Mein letztes Lager will mich schrecken. A sort of rondo (ABACADA) form. Within each episode, the form is solo-duet-solo, giving this movement a very symmetrical feel.
  4. Recitativo (Alto, Bass): Der Tod bleibt doch der menschlichen Natur verhaßt. Secco recitative.
  5. Chorale: Es ist genung. A plain chorale setting. This is the setting used by Berg in his Violin Concerto.
