Anyone have any idea who "M. Jersen" may have been? (also, is the title on the cover in Russian? It doesn't seem to say "... from the North Country" - maybe in early 20th-century Russian... - oh- Ole from Nordlanda...) - Schissel

In Russian -landia or -land (-ландия, -ланд) is used to make names of foreign Europian countries (e.g. in children's language or fairy tales). So although Nordland is not a Russian word, it can be easily understood by any Ruassian as North Country.
M. Jersen was the secretary of Swedish-Nogwegian Consulate in St. Petersburg. Died from tuberculosis. He was a friend of Ippolitov-Ivanov's father. The original piece used for libretto was an unpublished play left at their house, which was translated by composer's sister into Russian, when he was only a child (at least it is stated so here: Музыкальное образование в контексте культуры).

In 1928, revived at the Bolshoi Theater by its director Vladimir Leonardovich (Knipper) Nardov (1876–1942) (as Russian Wikipedia (Nardov's article) puts it, its first appearance on the Soviet (post-1917) stage.)
