Also called Marionette Viventi and Lebende Marionetten.

According to the title page, there were several versions of this piece: for orchestra, for piano two hands, for piano four hands, for violin and piano, and for flute and piano.

Leoncavallo's note at the beginning of the score specifies that he intended this composition as a ballet intermezzo. The list of works in his entry in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians includes a ballet titled La vita di una marionetta ca. 1900. It is not clear if Pantins vivants is an excerpt from this work or the work in its entirety, but they are presumably related.
