Root & Cady of Chicago published from 1858 until 1871, when a fire destroyed the premises. It was later known as Root & Co. The plates were bought by Brainard in 1871. Root was composer George Frederick Root's (1820—1895) brother. G.F. Root started The Root & Sons Music Company in 1875, and published as late as 1882. A separate Root and Sons, later absorbed by Church operated in Cincinatti.
