Commentary on the movements

Parte Prima

  1. Basso Solo: Siehe, ich will viel Fischer aussenden. By far the longest and most significant movement. Copiously articulated, and divided into the first 6/8 section and a cut-time section marked "Allegro quasi presto." The ending, in particular is notable for its almost minimalist rhythmic repetition, rare in Bach. However, the lush texture created by the instrumental ensemble is striking above all else.
  2. Recitativo (Tenor): Wie leichtlich könnte doch der Höchste uns entbehren. Secco recitative.
  3. Aria (Tenor): Nein, nein! The aria is clearly bipartite, as the text, divided into a section beginning with "No!" and a section beginning with "Yes!" suggests. For the most part, the obbligato is simply oboe d'amore.

Parte Seconda

  1. Arioso (Tenor, Bass): Jesus sprach zu Simon. The tenor here is simply cast in an introductory role.
  2. Aria Duetto (Soprano, Alto): Beruft Gott selbst, so muß der Segen. A mostly imitative duet; even the continuo participates.
  3. Recitativo (Soprano): Was kann dich denn in deinem Wandel schrecken. Secco recitative.
  4. Choral: Sing, bet und geh auf Gottes Wegen. A plain chorale setting.
