... are invariably 'sacred', so the tag is just 'hymns'. Thanks.

OK, thanks. I was meaning to ask a question relating to this. I often don't know how vocal works (especially ones with generic titles, like "In te Domine speravi" and "Jesu redemptor") should be tagged. I usually look at other pieces with the same title to see how they have been tagged (might explain the "sacred hymn text), but often there are different tags for the one text (psalm, cantata, motet, sacred concerto). Should a piece with a psalm text always be a psalm? Can you offer some advice on how to deal with this problem; maybe others are having the same confusion too? Thanks in advance.

Yes, a setting of a psalm text is always "psalms". This automatically puts it in the "Religious works" category as well.

If the text is religious (any religion), then the defaults are "sacred songs" (for a vocal soloist) or "sacred choruses" (for choir). But if it's not clear whether a work is intended for unaccompanied solo voices or unaccompanied chorus then use "motets".

If a work with the same title by another composer has already been tagged as "hymns", then that can be used instead.

Avoid "sacred cantatas" or "sacred concertos" if those descriptions don't appear in the work themselves, unless they appear in major catalogues of a composer's work, e.g. Graupner.

The bottom line: if you're not sure, leave it untagged for now.
