File descriptions ⟨User:Herzogvonbrunswick [#12612]

Dear William,

This seems to be an extremely common error so I wonder if there is something lacking in our instructions which confuses people.... It doesn't mean you're stupid (folks who prepare new editions generally don't qualify for this adjective, after all). So, here's a basic organizational principle of the site to keep in mind when adding things which might help to clarify things......

  • It is never necessary (in fact it's redundant) to repeat the composer's name in a file description (this is not the same as the file name - meaning the actual name of the PDF file) because there will never be anything on the page for A. Scarlatti's Messa à quattro in canone except for that particular work.

For example, your file name and description as uploaded were this:

|File Name 1=PMLP657854-Scarlatti,_Messa_a_Quattro_in_Canone;_K,_G,_S_&_B,_AD.pdf
|File Description 1=Scarlatti, A. Messa à Quattro in Canone; Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei

The file name is fine and dandy. It's definitely a good idea to list the composer and title in the name of the PDF itself. By contrast, the file description is way too long (as you'll discover when Peachnote's "View" button eventually shows up) and there is no need to mention the composer or the title at all (the only time you do this is when you're adding somethings to a collection page which has multiple composers and works). Note that the file description is now simply "Complete score". Also, if you want your editions to automatically appear in your category page, you'll need to use the "Add Your Own Edition" option from beneath the "Add File" button. It will not work if you change for first name to Willi either. Thanks,

Hi, thanks for that. I'll do that in the future. Also, I don't know why my name as editor was changed to Willi, it happened a while back and I can't seem to correct it. Could you please direct me to the page which would show me how? Thanks, W.

If you employ the "Add Your Own Edition" tool, it should automatically insert the editor name as William. The only reason I can think of that it would be truncating it to Willi would be some sort of auto-fill in your browser which remembers a typo. (A very annoying feature of auto-fill which I've experienced myself, by the way). At any rate, just copy and past the following next time {{LinkEd|William|Evans}} and your autofill will hopefully remember the correct one.
