Penitential Psalms is a setting for chorus and string orchestra based on the text of Chapter 6 of The Bible’s book of Psalms. The composition is highly dissonant, reflecting the urgent, imploring nature of the text: “Punish me not in anger, O Eternal…” Beginning with this strident plea for mercy, the piece takes the listener through the emotional journey of Psalm 6: desperation, languishing, despair, and hope. In the event that a string orchestra is unavailable, the conductor may employ the alternate arrangement for one-piano-four-hands.
