A rare score from Konstantinoff's archives ? ⟨User:Jurabe [#2256]

I am tentatively placing this work (Werner Janssen's Dixie) on the upload list, well knowing it can't go through on account of its characteristics, which is why I am only uploading the main cover page, the sub cover page, and a couple of included leaflets, which may be of general interest. The score is complete but lacking any sort of annotations on the part of Konstantinoff, who may have ordered it from Eulenburg on account of its "opulent" orchestration, as described in the New York Times. He was also interested in scoring for Jazz ensembles, which may be another motivation. On 28th May 1935 Kurt Eulenburg (under his father's signature, Ernst) wrote Konstantinoff a letter congratulating him on the success of his music in Leipzig and asking him to contact on his behalf a selection of conductors in France (Eugène Bigot, Paul Paray, Gaston Poulet, Piero Coppola) in order to promote some notable works by composers he fancied and whose works he printed, viz. Adolf Busch (Capriccio), Miklós Rózsa (Thema und Variationen), Paul Graener (Die Flöte von Sanssouci) and Werner Janssen's Dixie. He also mentions one Wunsch (Kleine Lustspiel-Suite) who doesn't seem to have make an inpact anywhere (no trace of him on the web)... From this we may surmise K.K. requested K. Eulenburg send him Janssen's Fugue in order to judge for himself, but it is doubtful he went to the trouble of contacting the aforesaid conductors.

There are other miscellanies in K.K's archives which I can upload in a similar case by case manner, the others being somewhat more admissible, I would presume, we'll see.

The few items you uploaded are probably OK. I'm searching the copyright records now and it is looking like this piece was never renewed. If I find no renewal, you could scan the whole score as it could theoretically fall under the EU's rule of the shorter term. Since publication was (more or less) simultaneous in Germany and the USA, the country of origin is likely the USA. Check the page - I'll add the shorter term notice if no renewal is found. As a work of US origin, it would not be eligible for 'restoration' either.

OK, thanks, I'll wait then for your green light.

You can send it to an admin (Cypressdome and Schissel are two who are very experienced) with access to the USA server, which is where it must go (Canada has no rule of the shorter term for US works). No renewal was found, so it's likely free in the USA.

Send to an admin ? What do you mean ? can't I just upload the usual way ? If it's a different way, how should I proceed ?

No you cannot upload the usual way because the main server is located in Canada, where the work is still under copyright. Schissel or Cypressdome can upload it to the USA server for you - unless you want to go and sign up to upload it there yourself. Note that it is not at all the same as uploading things here in the usual way. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to work around this issue - which is really a legal one. I'm usually so busy here that I am very inexperienced uploading to the USA server otherwise I'd have you send it to me.

I have been looking at the forum to discover how I can gain access (if at all) to the American server, to sign up, and drawn a blank. So how can I do this, what's their web address, or else how can I "send" a scan to Schissel or Cypressdome ? Sorry if I appear as the village bumpkin !

Hi Jurabe! I've been following from the sidelines this fascinating endeavor of yours to preserve Konstantinoff's archive of scores and would be happy to post any PD-US only scores you have. If you wish to do so yourself the process for getting admin access to IMSLP-US and the procedure for uploading scores is covered in this topic. If you would like me or Schissel to upload the scores the easiest way is to get a free account from a file hosting site such as Mediafire, upload the score to it, and provide us with a link to the file. You can create the composer and add the work page with the pertinent information if you wish and myself or Schissel would just need to upload the score to IMSLP-US and copy to the work page the code necessary to link to it. Thanks!

Thank you Cypressdome for chipping in, you're very helpful, but it appears you do not have a "valid e-mail" on the admnistrators' page, so I cannot contact you directly that way in order to let you have the web address for that score, unless there's another way. I have looked at the topic you mention for uploading to the USA server and do not think I will use that pipeline, so my remaining option then is to contact Schissel. I'll be doing that shortly.

That's weird regarding my email. I don't think I've ever received any confirmation notice from IMSLP. Guess I'll try to confirm it again. You can send me a private message through the imslpforums where I'm also cypressdome. Nevertheless, if you've contacted Schissel I'm sure he'll be happy to help out.
