Sorry for being presumptuous and offering a compositional opinion, but to my mind it would make more sense to have the bass clarinet staff above the cello staff, since it comes first in orchestral order, and is written in the treble clef. Just a collegial observation.

Dear Skryabushka, thanks for sharing your opinion. In the first design of the piece (which was written for my son - a violoncellist - and myself), the "normal" order of bass clarinet and violoncello was used.

But, because of the fact that the violoncello holds "the first part", and the bass clarinet "the second one", I switched the both of them.

That makes sense, although - and again, sorry for being presumptuous - to my eye, the parts seem fairly equal. If I may ask, have you and your son performed the piece, and if so, did you work from score or parts? Did you make the switch because you found this configuration more comfortable or intuitive? You could always provide the score in both configurations.

As an aside, is there perhaps a recording of the piece? I have very dear friends who are husband and wife, she a clarinettist and he a cellist, both playing for the municipal orchestra here in my city of Cape Town, South Africa, and I know they are always looking for interesting repertoire to play together. I would love to be able to reccommend the piece to them.

Again, sorry for pestering you with my opinions - I am only motivated by a genuine curiosity.

Kind regards, Kyle.

Dear Kyle, Sorry for the late reply.

We performed the piece during a lockdown-miniconcert. My son worked from the part, I was using the score. The switch was made intuitive and in the past, most of the time in my arrangements for bass clarinet and cello, the cello plays the first part. But it is a very good idea to provide the score in both configurations. I just uploaded the second one.

Nice that you want to recommend my pieces to your friends. Unfortunately, I haven't a good recording of the piece. I just uploaded an synthesized version. There is also a fine duo for clarinet and cello on my IMSLP-page, called "Et la Lumiere Fut"

Yours, Werner
