IMSLP #05656Orpheus, S.98 (Liszt, Franz) [#30522]

Note that the measure-numbering is three measures off, starting with the notated #150—since mm. 141–143 (at the bottom of page 31) were overlooked in the count. In other words, what is shown as measure 150 is actually 153, and so on for the rest of the score.

And then the editors of this score did it AGAIN on page 35—overlooked the seven measures at the bottom of the page in their count. From this point on, then, all the measure numbers are 10 too low; what is shown as #170 on page 36 is actually measure number 180.

I hate to break it to you. It's not the editors who did it, It was the engravers. Unfortunately they're there. I'm sure MOLA has an errata list for this score which I'm not about to go look at. It seems the engraver made the mistake by skipping the break in-between the systems and assumed that 150 was there. It happens, just live with it. Cross it out and fix it if you need to. But IMHO I wouldn't be using that score anyways, quality isn't that great....

Can we agree that editors who don't check the work of their engravers (if the responsibility for the faulty numbering was indeed theirs and theirs alone) do seem to have rather shirked their duties, yes? Aside from being needlessly snarky about this, the responder has, regrettably, missed the point, which had nothing to do with the quality of the score. Musicians who do detailed work with scores usually gravitate toward scores that include measure numbers, to spare them the labour of adding numbers themselves; it's those musicians to whom my warning was addressed. It would be helpful if the administrators of IMSLP could add a note of caution to the scans of this edition…

I went ahead and edited said page. We could probably altogether delete that score, tbh and add correct measure numbers to one of the scores available. If it pleases you, I can do that for you.

There you have it. Added the CORRECT measure numbers to Piupianissimo's score and added it. You have a better option laying ahead waiting for your mouse to click download!

Thank you for adding the numbers to another score. Following the principle that the more information and sources we all have available the better, my own preference would be to NOT delete the Eulenburg score. It may be a relatively unsatisfactory edition of Orpheus, but it is a historical document and access to it might well be important to some Liszt scholar.
