Been a while.

Indeed it has. I don't think I have time to stick around much, though---I just figured I should at least answer my messages.

KGill I thought I should let you know, since you came back on the site this week, one new tool we got this past year (provided by Dbmiller, I also suggest you might want to talk with him about programming based things and also he has a bot that can go site wide to do workpage fixes such as changing out licenses) on the site is the ability to upload files beyond the 250 mb limit that the site has now (up to 4 GBs), see this thread on how to use it.

There is also policy changes we had to change this past year (provided by Dbmiller as well, he is the head copyright reviewer and librarian) as well that you were not around for at the time such as depreciating Non-Commercial and NoDerivs (we cannot accept files under these licenses except for PRO licenses).

That's neat to be able to upload such large files, thanks for letting me know! I did see the news about cc-nc being deprecated last year. While I understand those licenses are flawed, I do wonder about the advisability of disallowing even new versions of files which were so licensed. That seems like it will only lead to out-of-date (and inferior) content---like Allen Garvin not being able to fix typos---without solving any problem, since the old files are still there with the undesirable license, after all. (He's a major loss to the site; I was dismayed to see how that went down.)

So if someone wants to update a Non-Commericial file under the file number, the user WILL have to change to a more permissive license as shown here on the file block in order for us to re-approve the old file number.

Right, that's what I mean, I'm saying that seems counterproductive.

So unfortunately, legally speaking as you probably understand, we cannot site wide just use a bot to change the licenses on a user's files without there express consent.

I didn't have a lot of choice here as there was some controversary early last year surrounding all of this so we all have to follow this now. So yeah its very repetative to have to ask each user that does this every time, we are in the process of getting a completely new website soon and also hopefully a new workflow to work under for us admins as the system we have now has never worked very well at a large scale for reviewing uploads on a daily basis.

I emailed you about a couple more details you should know about.

»So unfortunately, legally speaking as you probably understand, we cannot site wide just use a bot to change the licenses on a user's files without there express consent.«
Oh sorry, I was unclear: I meant allowing new versions of files to be uploaded while retaining the deprecated license, i.e., not requiring them to change licenses at all in this case. (Within reason of course, only for corrections and not to add new music.)

Nope, any new version under the file number, the user must change (or we can change it) the license to a freer one, doesn't matter the reason. I see what you mean and that was something I kind of wish we could allow but legally speaking, its not something we want to promote with the website anymore with the ambiguity licenses with any kind of updates. So the files on here as is are left for dead unless the composer or contributor of those files decides to change them.
