Chopin nocturnes ⟨User:Fryderyka [#31519]

Hi Fryderyka,

I'm the other person who submitted a scan of the Nocturnes by Chopin in the National Edition. I'm writing with three purposes.

First, I want to say that your scan looks terrific! I'm really happy someone is taking on the project of putting up the whole National Edition.

Second, I want to let you know that I already have a scan of the Études from Series A. So if you haven't scanned those already, I wanted to let you know you can avoid duplicating effort that I've taken on already, if you so wish.

Third, I wanted to note something about copyright. In my upload of the Nocturnes, I removed almost all the editorial fingerings because I thought they wouldn't be allowed. If you want to submit other volumes from this edition, it may be worth messaging Carolus or Sallen112 to double-check what they think about the permissibility of including editorial fingerings. None of us would want the scores you've so carefully put together to be taken down later. I'm also interested in the outcome of this, so if you end up looking into it, please let me know the result – it will affect which version of my scan of the Études I would post, as I already removed editorial fingerings from that, but I have the original scan too.

Thanks so much, and I'm looking forward to seeing your scans of other volumes from the National Edition on IMSLP in the coming years!

Hello Fugalicious, thank you so much for reaching out.

To address points one and two, I've already scanned the entire National Edition at high resolution (except for the op. 22 orchestral score, which I don't own).

I plan to submit each score as they reach their 25th birthday; right now, I believe the only volumes that old are the Series A Ballades, Nocturnes, Polonaises, and Sonatas.

As for point three, thank you for the heads-up; I also don't want any of the Ekier urtext to be taken down in the future.

I will certainly reach out to Carolus or Sallen112 and inform you of their decision. Do you know if one of them would be better to write to than the other?

It's delightful that you've done it already!

Either Carolus or Sallen112 will know. I would probably write to Carolus first.

If you find out that the italic fingerings do need to be removed, I'd be happy to lend a hand with it. Let me know in this thread if that's needed.

Thanks again for the hard work you've put in on this, and I'm looking forward to seeing the scans!

Hi again, Fryderyka, thanks for starting the thread with Carolus (Carl) earlier. Based on the latest message, from Sallen112, it seems clear that the fingerings in italics do need to be removed for these scans.

It's probably a good idea to reply to Sallen112 when you can in the thread, to indicate whether you want to do that work for the Nocturnes you submitted: https://imslp.org/index.php?title=Special:WikiForum&thread=31545

For future uploads, I'm happy to help you by removing the fingerings if you need a hand with this. I haven't found a better way to do this than to use something like the Brush tool in Photoshop to edit out fingerings by hand, and sometimes I change the placement of the historical fingerings if they'd look weird without the editorial fingerings there.

For the Études, I'm happy to send you the copy I have with fingerings removed already; you can have the glory of being the uploader, but I'd appreciate being acknowledged as the scanner, if you want to go that route.

Let me know what you think about next steps! I really want to see the National Edition on IMSLP and am thrilled that you've been here doing so much of the hard work on this already.

Hey Fugalicious,

Thank you again for reaching out before; I'm glad you caught the copyright issue before I had uploaded any more of the National Edition. Also my apologies for using the incorrect pronouns earlier in the Carolus thread.

I'll work on removing the fingerings from my scans and reuploading them. It may take a few weeks though; I don't have as much time on my hands as I would like. I've replied to the Carolus thread with the same information.

Hey Frydyerka,

That all sounds great, and thanks for replying to Carolus and Sallen112. I think you get this, but the only fingerings that need to be removed are the ones in italics, in case that wasn't clear.

No worries about the pronoun; I didn't list mine anywhere on my page. What do you go by?

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help you out. You can always consult my upload of the nocturnes to see how I addressed removals of fingerings, and in case it helps, my scan of the études is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16rRkBWMikXH3J1Wn8iqbrQYdGbQv3HfA/view

Thanks again for your great attitude and all the work you're doing with the National Edition :)

Hey Fugalicious,

I go by he/him as well.

One question on fingering removal. If an italic fingering is present in a historical edition (ie Mikuli's edition), is it safe to keep it in the scan?

Not sure the answer to that—I'd ask in the thread with Carolus and Sallen112.

Hi there, I was curious how things are going on the nocturnes! If you have a chance to respond, I'd love to know the latest news.

To be honest, I completely forgot. Life's been hectic for me.

If I upload Chopin in the future, I'm considering creating a new edition, based on both Ekier and historical editions, to release into the public domain worldwide.

It would take more effort, but I'd be much happier with the result.

That sounds like a terrific idea! And no worries about forgetting; I certainly know how things can come up.

Earlier, you had mentioned that you had scanned the National Edition. How would you feel about sharing your scans with me, and I can upload whatever is allowed on IMSLP, while crediting you as the scanner? I'm quite confident there are many people who would be interested in accessing those scores, and I think the two of us could make it happen together. Let me know what you think!
