According to a recent manuscript discovery (Cardiff, Mackworth Collection, Vol. 12), the two G-minor Allemandes (formerly BWV 836 and 837) are actually composed by Pietro Giuseppe Sandoni.
This discovery was made by the harpsicordist, conductor and musicologist Nicoleta Paraschivescu, whose study was published in Bach-Jahrbuch 2022.
According to her discovery, these two pieces are part of Sandoni's "Lesson" No.3 from the mentioned manuscript:
- Mvt. 1 "Prelude" (Largo, 15 bars) = formerly BWV 837
- Mvt. 2 "Allemande" (Allegro, 20 bars) = formerly BWV 836
- Mvt. 3 "Gigue" (missing in Wilhelm Friedemann Bach's notebook)
This discovery led to a revision in the Bach-Digital database. Moreover, in the recent edition of Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis, the two pieces lost their BWV numbers (that's why I wrote 'formerly') and were included in the Supplement.
