very intrigued by conjecture regarding the possible relation between this work and Buxtehude's Capricciosa variations (BuxWV 250; I have heard a recording of that interesting set...) - based on, I seem to recall, a theme similar to? the one that Bach uses in his Quodlibet here, and unusual (... I think?) at the time in being of similar scope to Bach's (and written before, unless Bach's was written much earlier than its publication in 1741, as Buxtehude died in 1707, of course...
There is a question whether there is any evidence that Bach knew this (particular) work of Buxtehude's. Anyhow, apologies for speculation.)
