Bertini Sextet no.2 ⟨User:James Bailey [#4723]

Don't know if you've had a look at this work (it's probably discussed in a reference work )- I'm just curious if you have a moment (apologies! not urgent at all!!...) - do you know if anyone has any guesses who is being memorialized in its second movement Marche Funèbre "29 Juillet"?

Thanks... Eric S.

Hi Eric,

It is nice to hear from you. I have not been able to look at the second sextuor, and I am presently on vacation in Ottawa so I don't have access to my references. It will have to wait until we return home at the end of the month. If all else fails I will try to get in touch with Pascal Beyls. The Sextuors are high on my to-do list---the 5th is posted, and I had most of the 6th done when I realized that my copy was incomplete (I'm not sure what I will do about that). I recently obtained period transcriptions of the first five sextuors and the nonetto for piano four hands. I have finished the nonetto itself except for transposing the trumpet part so it can be played on a modern instrument.

Curiously, I had considered contacting you to ask a couple questions, but they wouldn`t follow from this thread so I will start a new one.

Hi Eric,

Beyls, Pascal in his book (Henri Bertini, pianiste virtuose, compositeur de musique) says that the second grand sextuor was written in 1833 and that "le deuxième mouvement est une marche funèbre intitulée 29 juillet, en souvenir de la dernière journée de la Révolution de 1830". I am constantly amazed at how thoroughly Beyls researched this book.

Ah, thanks much! Have inserted the information into the workpage (with a link to Wikipedia).
