Telemann's (mit A.Hoffmann) 'Klingende Geographie' ⟨User:Notenschreiber [#5025]

In my recent upload of this composite work concocted by the editor Adolph Hoffmann in one of the Möseler Verlag Corona Series (Nr 70), I ventured the wish that a native speaker might care to read it thoroughly in order to shed light on his procedure and maybe add a couple of remarks on the work page. I can muddle through some German (nur gebrochenes !), but not through 2 pages of Gothic script. If you would care to do this for the community it would be great, thanks anyway. Should you accept, I will place a pdf file of the editor's Foreword into the cloud for you to consult.

You have it here : https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BwDmaPnNSdCdcFhjVHhKenBnS2s/edit?usp=sharing Vielen Dank !

Although A.Hoffmann seems to consider the authenticity of Telemann's contribution to the 'Singenden Geographie' booklet as beyond doubt, I've seen it judged doubtful here and there, which may account for its absence from his complete works catalogs, at least those I have consulted on Telemann's imslp page.

Here are some informations. The preface is first of all an advertising for Hoffmanns idea for this collection. Sometimes a little bit curious.

The “Singende Geographie“ (SG) has the number TWV 25:1, I think it is really a composition by Telemann. I found the single movement titles elsewhere:

Wie die Geographie zu lernen: Kommt, zu lernen mit Belieben - Europa, zeige mir dein Bild - Portugal - Spanien - Schweiz - Welschland (Norditalien) - Mittelitalien - Frankreich - Provence - Lothringen, Burgund - England, Schottland, Irland - Schottland - Vereinigte Niederlande (Holland) - Spanische Niederlande - Deutschland - Österreich - Bayern - Franken, Schwaben, Burgund - Ober- und Niederrhein - Westfalen - Niedersachsen - Kurfürstentum - Hannover - Herzogtum Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel - Hildesheim - Obersachsen - Böhmen - Skandinavien (Dänemark, Norwegen) - Schweden - Russland (Moskau) - Polen - Ungarn: In Oberungarn - Europäische Türkei - Asien - Asiatische Türkei - Afrika - Amerika - Beschluss: Nun senket euch, ihr Masten

In his “Klingende Geographie” (KG) Hoffmann collected movements of Ouverture-Suites of Telemann, which he related one-to-one to the movements of SD. Sometimes the relation between the movements of SG and KG is clear by the original titles of Telemann, in other cases it is less apparently, only stilistic elements and the charakteristic of the music seems suitable to the geographic issues in the eyes or ears of Hoffmann.

Hoffmann suggested in his forward, that one should perform SG and KG together, alternating after each movement. Therefore he even transposed sometimes the movements of the suites to make them better suitable to each other.

With one exeption (No. 35 from SLUB) all movements are from manuscipts of Darmstadt. In a description of a CD i found further informations about the origins of the movements:

Thank you very much for your trouble and contribution toward shedding light on this rather obfuscated subject. Your comments clinch the fact that the music from Singende Geographie was indeed Telemann's and that Hoffmann's contribution is peculiar but not without merit.

Yes, I think it would be helpful to place side by side the numbers from both SG and KG as you have done, together with a short comment explaining Hoffmann's intentions, all the more so as the 2 works are still performed in conjunction => http://www.helmstedter-nachrichten.de/lokales/Helmstedt/klingende-und-singende-geographie-id225266.html
