In Gerson's fair copy the author of the Italian translation of Goethe's text is given as 'A. Ganganelli'. Someone (you?) has expanded the surname to 'Antonio'.
If you expanded the surname, then based on which information?
Through Google search I'm able to find one person, Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli (1705-1774) who became pope Clemens XIV. Ie. he was partly living in Goethe's life time. I very much doubt, however, that he should be the author of the poem which was first published 1806 several years upon the death of Clemens XIV. Of course the poem may have been written before it was published, but ...
Do you know about another person named Ganganelli writing poems around 1800? Gerson wrote other songs to texts by that poet.
I'm preparing my modern edition these days.
