Hallo Tim Willis,
It seems, you are extracting images at SBB from the "DFG-viewer".
In case you have not discovered the download-button on the Werkansicht for digital items of Berlin Staatsbibliothek:
There is a very small pdf icon in the heading bar (the middle icon under the description "Bild").
Those pdf downloads are max resolution (ca. 400 dpi). Don't get scared by the even larger description (often GB), that's the uncompressed size. Actual download size is about a third - still very large. I usually save the pdf-images then with jpg-compression to get to about 1 mb per page, which should be manageable even for users with slow internet connections. See the CPE Bach oboe concertos for an example.

Thank you! I have tried downloading from SBB using the PDF tool but it took a very long time. I have been downloading them as JPG images and converting them to PDFs. This is the fastest way I have found so far. Unfortunately the Benda sonatas are in low resolution to begin with, so the scores I have uploaded are quite blurry, but it has worked quite well for other pieces that I have prepared for IMSLP (the CPE Oboe Concerti, for example!).

| When I try to download using that button I always get the same file: Mlynarski Reverie. So I saved each DFG viewer image as bitmap (only 7MB), which gives poor quality mono pdfs after conversion with GIMP 2.8 (see Taubert violin sonata op 150). Advice welcomed.

| Not sure what causes you to download the Mlynarski (browser cache?), but I completely failed to get a complete download the entire weekend, aborted with "bad server response", or tried to open with "file damaged" anywhere from 5 to a max of 445mb - grrrh. I agree, for files that large the pdf download button is less than useful.
But I got a little further investigating the new interface with the Benda No.34 (control-click in the image for a menu and save to image to your hd):
In both SBB-interface display and DFG-view the initial page view size is only 800x118 pixel (that seems to be Tim Willis upload too). But if you save the jpeg image after zoom, you can get to 1200x1677 pixel (DFG-viewer) or to 1391x1944(SBB-interface). Time-consuming, because you have to zoom for every single page, but these are quite acceptable in resolution, at least for manuscript scans.
From the DFG-viewer, trying to "open in a new browser-window" results immediately in an open jpg-file, but from the SBB interface you actually get a new browser window:
http://ngcs.staatsbibliothek-berlin.de/?action=metsImage&format=jpg&metsFile=PPN74388843X&divID=PHYS_0190&width=1391.25&rotate=0
you can turn pages by changing 0190 to 0191etc., but you can also reach the max resolution of the pdf by changing width to 2400. No need to wait for an unaborted download for an acceptable resolution.
Regarding the Taubert Sonata:
Max resolution again is at width=2400, but from the pdf download resolution is still better at 3327x4286 pixel...
I would crop and scale to 21cm width at 600 dpi, only then convert to grayscale, deskew if required, set the threshold in the color menu to e.g. 180. and then export as pdf. Not sure if this is the best process, I am still fighting with Gimp on my new mac, much prefer Photoshop 7 but it will only run on my old mac...

| Cypressdome must know the secret; just look at the sharp images on the recent Vollweiler trio scans from SBB.

| I wrote a note to SBB complaining about the slow download speed and the enormous filesize. Apparently they have some technical problems, but I was given a special download link for a quickly (20 min.) loading 340mb file at an amazing 4400x6200 pixel resolution. About 1mb/page with jpg-compression. How best to proceed with this gift? I could just update Tim Willis files with the higher resolution ones, or load them in addtion, even add a monochrome b/w version.
Belatedly I also realized, that these scores contain an ornamented version of the violin solo on a second system (sometimes even two ornamented alternatives on two additional systems: contemporaray embellishments anno 1780 - thats really quite interesting!
Update: See here for comparison http://imslp.org/wiki/Violin_Sonata_in_A_major,_L3.109_(Benda,_Franz)

| Your new upload of the first Benda Sonata is much better! Thank you! I think the best idea would be to replace my old uploads because they are basically useless, especially for those who will want to print these sonatas. I haven't tried, but I don't think it would be possible to read them at all.
It sounds like it will still be a big task for you. Is there some way I can help?
I agree! This is a very important collection, not just for violinists, but anyone who wants to play this kind of repertoire.
All the best.

| Perhaps the old uploads from Tim Willis should not be deleted, there have a small size and at least via screen they are pretty good readable. I printed one page,
the result was not so bad. There are more examples of files with diffenent sizes and qualities here at IMSLP.

| Thank you for the SBB mono versions. Could you please do Taubert's piano trio Op.96 and J. Leonhardt's Piano Trio Op.18. Incidentally, Taubert's First Piano trio (on IMSLP) is only in color at the moment.

| Schalltrichter, I'm not sure to whom you are directing your request but I just happened to start on Taubert's Op.96 last night.
