Page re-directing versus deleting ⟨User:Tim.willis1685 [#8048]

Hi Tim,

I'm just going to copy the text from the thread I left on Rob Peters' talk page as the issue discussed there also applies to the Sirmen Duets.

In cases where work pages already have files on them (and those have passed copyright review) it is better to re-direct the pages to the page where you have moved the files as opposed to deleting the now-empty pages. The reason for this is that external sites (especially Google) may already have links pointing to the original page and by deleting that page those links would now go to a dead end. If you re-direct the page then those links will take them to the page where the files now reside. To do this you replace the content of the page you wish to re-direct with the following: #REDIRECT [[Work Title (Composer Name)]]. For the Homilius Choral Preludes it would appear like this: #REDIRECT [[32 Chorale Preludes, HoWV VIII.2-33 (Homilius, Gottfried August)]]. When you preview the page you'll see the blue link for the page where the content now resides. The same can be done for categories where the re-direct would be in the following format (for a person's category): #REDIRECT [[:Category:Last Name, First Name]]. As you can see re-direct solves the problem where you want to do a page move but doing that would wipe out the content of the existing target page.

Thank you. I've had a look at what you did for the Sirmen. I will do that from now on.

Hello Cypressdome,

When redirecting a page, is it OK to copy and paste the tags across as well?
