You should be aware that there are much better quality scans of this archive available from the Cathedral in Guatemala where the archive is kept. The digitised microfilm is often poor quality or illegible. Can I suggest that you try to get hold of the better material? I can give you contact materials (by email)

Hi Jonathan,

I had read your article on CPDL and I was aware that better quality scans could be obtained directly from the archive, but I had assumed that this is the same as many libraries and obtaining scans or hard copies often comes at a cost. Is this not the case for the Antigua archives? I also felt that it would be unethical to ask for a large proportion of this collection and then make it available for free elsewhere.

I have been adding the microfilm scans here on IMSLP because I think this repertoire is largely under represented and even those interested in early music from the Americas have no idea where to find it. I don't like adding bad quality scans, but hopefully it will make others aware of this collection.

Perhaps I should make a note on the Musica Colonial page here, for those interested in specific pieces, that better quality scans are possible to obtain from the cathedral.

What do you think?

Thanks for your reply. What you suggest sounds reasonable.
