This string quartet was originally named "1917" (due to the 100th anniversary of the "Russian revolution"). However, years later, Brandes felt that some people could see it as a "regime praising", which also goes against his own political opinion. Since this piece has no political meaning (just history-telling, like an opera), Brandes decided to change the name of the quartet to just "Russian", and the 5th movement title to "Downfall". The former names can be find in the individual parts score, which doesn't affect the performance
