W.H. Cundy

History

W.H. Cundy arrived in Boston in 1855 and started a music publishing and woodwind instrument retailing business. The sheet music catalog provided repertoire for the instruments, as with Rudall, Carte in England and Buffet-Crampon in France in the same period.

Harry Bettoney (1867-1953) an immigrant from Oadby in Leicestershire, England, joined Cundy's firm in 1893 and oversaw the founding and growth of the Cundy-Bettoney woodwind instrument manufacturing company. Cundy-Bettoney started around 1900, shortly before Cundy's retirement in 1907, was at its peak between 1920 and 1940, and closed in 1962.
