History

Jacob Richard Clarke (1822-1893), born in Taunton, Somerset, England, settled in Sydney about 1853. With W. P. Woolcott he formed a partnership as publishers, book, print and music sellers, in George Street, specializing in light music and compositions by colonial and visiting artists. When this partnership dissolved Clarke continued alone, his 'Music Hall' at 205 George Street becoming a popular meeting place for musicians.
