Misc. Notes
|
There is some confusion about the meaning of Salieri's turn symbols. These have been rendered as groups of three grace notes with the applicable accidentals here, though it is entirely possible I have made mistakes here in regards either to direction or placement within the beat. This issue does not apply to the brass instruments.

Horns in F throughout as opposed to in F switching to in D for the coda in the original. Trumpets in C throughout as opposed to trumpets in D throughout in the original. Perhaps the three trombone parts could just as easily be played on three tenor trombones. The distinction for the bass trombone here is that in this edition it is notated in bass clef rather than tenor clef.

It is possible that Salieri meant these percussion parts to be played by one man. Nowadays two separate musicians should be hired.

Misc. Notes
|
The first and second violins should be placed antiphonally (that is, to the left and right of the conductor), and the first offstage violin should be drawn from the first violins and placed offstage on the same side as them; likewise with the second offstage violin and the rest of the second violins.

Misc. Notes
|
There is no need to hire a violin soloist for the violin solos in these Variations; the concertmaster (or leader, in British parlance) should be able to do a good job of it. Then, during those solos, the assistant concertmaster will be leading the rest of the first violins, so for that reason he or she is provided with a part showing both what the first violins are playing as a section and what the concertmaster plays as a soloist. As for the logistics of removing the mutes, this needs to be done before Variation 4: a gradual removal during Variation 3 might be acceptable.
