Misc. Comments

  • Original instrumentation and title required. Source would be helpful too.
  • According to Discipleship MInistries History of Hymns, Schop composed the melody, J.S. Bach composed the harmonization. The original title was Ermuntre Dich, and it was first published in Johann Rist's Himmlische Lieder, which is available at Bavarian State Library. (The Bavarian State Library has more than one copy, but the linked edition has 388 pages, while another one (1657) has only 82 pages, so it is either incomplete or a highly abridged version.)
  • Rist (1607-1667) was the author of the original German, which had 11 stanzas. John Troutbeck (1832-1899) did the English translation but only for one stanza (stanza 9). Eventually, the "Hymnal Revision Committee for the UM Hymnal" asked Fred Pratt Green to translate two additional stanzas.
