Note : Volume 1 : The first item "Added as an Afterthought" started as a continuation of the second part of the Diptyque, it being a "left-over" from the Londonderry Air variations. Accordingly it was expanded more than each item in the suite.
The other pieces were devised as "fillers" but took on a form of independence in the compositional process : 'Pièce Ajourée' means something like 'Piece with a hole/hollow part', probably because it begins with a pedal solo. 'Pièce Bicaudale' alludes to the double ending coda. Of late, this last piece has been extensively overhauled.
Volume 2 : Subtitled "Barocades", which alludes to the baroque-style elements to be found in various forms in the 8 pieces of the collection.
