Navigation etc.

Though the title page specifies the harpsichord, the composer actually calls for a chordal instrument and a viola da gamba. Some sections are for viola da gamba and harpsichord, and there are some sections with all three instruments playing à 3. There is a record (in the Mercure Galant of August 1707) of all six sonatas having been performed before Louis XIV, to whom the composer dedicated the work. Two members of the Marchand family were the performers.
