Symphonic Suite in G was inspired by the hope felt as a new year starts, flavored by memories of past hopes, sometimes failed, and the reconciliation process enabling us to move ahead through whatever challenges the future may bring.
“I - Dream for the New Year” opens with a calm, almost pompous melody. The melody flows forward, shared and handed off among the orchestral voices playing variations in short phrases. The movement builds, returning to the main theme, now covered by the full orchestra, then concludes on an emphatic note as if the Dream has been adopted in earnest.
“II - Lament” begins with a subdued tone as the orchestra slowly unfolds a fanfare befitting a movie soundtrack. The orchestration echoes the sorrows and regrets encountered in pursuing the New Year Dream, juxtaposed to periodic spurts of joyful motion in five alternating mood/sections. Section three delivers an almost tragic sense, resolving into a forward moving gigue (section 4) which promises to replace lament with a happier mood. A final variation on the opening fanfare threatens the happier mood before moving forward in a series of chord changes finally finding release in the final chords of the movement.
“III - Acceptance” emerges from a fragile background as the regrets of the previous movement give way to a hopeful melody of acceptance of whatever challenges have impacted the dream so far. The opening oboe theme evolves as each section of the orchestra carries the music forward, developing a sense of inevitability as the winds escalate and hand the theme off to the brass section. The string section reduces some of the tension before the oboe and horns reprise the theme once more before moving directly into the 4th movement.
“IV - Onward Through the Fog” opens hesitantly, growing confidently to introduce the forward moving 4th movement. The varieties of orchestration reflect the variety of challenges the dreamer continues to face, but now there is a confident air, as if the dreamer now knows there will be success in the end. A major challenge then looms up, illustrated with reprises of the earlier themes in the Suite, now played in minor keys until a final glorious return to G major settles into a series of key modulations that embody the whims of fate as the dreamer moves into the fog of the future, with all possibilities still intact.
