Composition date from page 36 of Carl Nielsens samling: katalog over komponistens musikhåndskrifter (seen through Google Books). First violin sonata to be published, second or third to be composed (preceded by an ms. sonata in G major 1881-1882 - also listed on page 36, published 2009 by Hansen in "Juvenilia and Addenda", and recorded once on the Kontrapunkt label along with other early unpublished Nielsen chamber works (see WorldCat).

By the time Nielsen composed his first sonata for violin and piano, he had already established himself in the Copenhagen concert life – for instance with the performance of his first symphony (CNW 25) in 1894. The date of composition can be determined fairly accurately on the basis of the fair copy's end-datings: 5 April (first movement), 22 June (second movement) and 23 August (third movement) 1895.
