the several-times-removed score says studies, and so possibly may have said some of the first editions; however, the 1919 edition said caprices (which is also how it's usually referred to in "the literature").

Book on Karg-Elert gives 1918/9 for publication date, if Google Snippet view is giving accurate data. Hrm. May try to borrow a copy of the book...
