These pieces were offered either separately or together as a set. Note that the collection was referred to at the time as Pauline Viardot’s op. 6 (probably the only attempt ever to apply opus numbers to her works). The Berceuse existed in a version for solo violin, as performed in London in 1871 by Hugo Heermann, and it may have been sketched as early as 1852 as a piano piece for Frederick Lehmann; it was played as such at a concert in Paris in September 1897. The Bohémienne, too, was played as a virtuoso solo piece by Paul Viardot in 1883. The Vieille chanson apparently later existed in a version for cello and piano.
