The items in this category consist of files made from scans of manuscripts or printed facsimiles of manuscripts. A manuscript can be either a holograph (written out in the composer's own hand) or the work of a copyist. Works were often copied out by hand before the advent of computerized music engraving in the last two decades of the 20th century. The frequency of manuscript copies of works decreased as music publishers became more common and distribution channels more widespread in the 19th century. However, large works such as operas and ballets were often available only in manuscript copies well into the 20th century.
