According to Joubert’s biographical notes for Les Maîtres contemporains de l'orgue vol. 6 (1914), Édouard Samuel was born in Rotterdam (Holland) and studied music in the Conservatoire Royal of Brussels with François-Joseph Fétis. In 1887, he became professor of harmony in the same institution.
