While Kröpsch wrote a fantasie and variations on Im tiefen Keller, the melody in Messerschmidt's arrangement doesn't match the main melody in Kröpsch's work. However, it also doesn't match the more famous Im tiefen Keller (Fischer, Ludwig), upon which many fantasias and variations were based. It is unknown what this comes from. Im tiefen Keller was a drinking song text, so it is possible several composers set the text to music.
