Misc. Comments

  • The correct spelling in Italian is "Pensieroso". Did Handel himself make this misspelling? Understandably, he was quite familiar with the italian language, so maybe we owe it to Milton.
  • While Milton's Il Penseroso is an ode, Handel's work based on it does not seem to have used the word "ode", although there is no autograph manuscript available at IMSLP as of yet. Hence, this is tagged as an oratorio and not as an ode, though if the word "ode" appears on an autograph manuscript, the tag can be added.
