Originally for piano four-hands, Ravel orchestrated the work in 1911 for a ballet production, adding two new movements, the Prélude and Danse du rouet et scène, which were to precede the beginning of the suite, shortly before the ballet's premiere on January 29, 1912. The original piano four-hand version and the arrangement for solo piano by Ravel's friend Jacques Charlot (d. 1916) were both published by Durand in 1910.
