Founded 1861 by Gustav Schirmer. Engraving and printing facility opened in 1891. Schirmer is now a subsidiary of Music Sales, Inc., though the print rights are held by Hal Leonard.
Schirmer's plate numbering system was employed in a fairly consistent order. They are thus generally reliable as a guide to determining the date for a particular score.
