History

Sol Bloom

Sol Bloom (1870-1947) was an American politician. However, until the age of 30 he was involved in popular entertainment. His most successful venture was the 'Midway Plaisance', at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. This fairground was described as "a grand mix of fakes, hokum, and the genuinely educational and introduced the "hootchy-cootchy" version of the belly dance in the "Street in Cairo" amusement".
As for publishing, Bloom was the Chicago manager of M. Witmark & Sons, then started his own publishing company in 1896. This operated for about ten years.
Bloom moved to New York in 1903 and was involved in various busineses. Finally he served fourteen terms in the United States House of Representatives from the West Side of Manhattan, from 1923 until his death in 1949. He was described by one analyst as follows: "He is of the easy-going, superficial, glad-handish type rather than a man of outstanding intellect". On the other hand, as chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee from 1939 to 1947 and again in 1949, he helped shape American foreign policy.
