  • Although published as String Quartet No.1, it was the only of Gade's 3 completed quartets to be printed during his lifetime.
  • Composed in July-September 1887 (with an opening movemet in D minor); a new opening movement composed in February-7 March 1888, the copy of the whole quartet finished on 18 March. Some private performance was given in April 1888, and Breitkopf & Härtel was ready to publish the quartet in May 1888. The scherzo was revised in June 1889. The score came to Leipzig only in July 1889. The edition appeared in April 1890. - Booklet notes to cpo 555 199-2
