Hindemith's title is as above. German editions have the titles Sinfonische Metamorphosen nach Themen von Carl Maria von Weber or Sinfonische Metamorphosen Carl Maria von Weber'scher Themen; numerous further variants and misspellings in other sources that were found. In 1940 Hindemith and Massine had discussed plans for a ballet using Weber's music, and in March Hindemith made piano scores of Weber's Op. 60 No. 4 and Op. 10 No. 2 --"die WeberMusik leicht gefärbt und ein bißchen schärfer gemacht" (Hindemith to Getrud Hindemith, letter of 12 April 1940)--the pieces that eventually served as the basis of the first and third movements, respectively, of the Symphonic Metamorphosis. The ballet project was not realized, in part because Massine wanted strict arrangements of the Weber pieces. Actually staged as a ballet by Georges Balanchine and his New york City Ballet, 25 Novemeber 1952.
