Symphony No.5, Op.82 (Sibelius, Jean)

It is very unlikely that this work is public domain in the EU, or in any country where the copyright term is life-plus-70 years. However, it is in the public domain in Canada (where IMSLP is hosted) and other countries where the term is life-plus-50 years (such as China, Japan, Korea and many others worldwide). As this work was first published before 1923 or failed to meet notice or renewal requirements to secure statutory copyright with no "restoration" under the GATT amendments, it is very likely to be public domain in the USA as well.

Misc. Comments

The first version, which has been commercially recorded, has 4 movements and lasts about 35 minutes in that recording. The 4 movements are

  1. Tempo tranquillo assai - Allegro moderato
  2. Allegro commodo
  3. Andante mosso
  4. Allegro commodo - Largamente molto

Sibelius.fi indeed identifies 3 versions (1915, 1916, 1919.) Perhaps two or all three of these versions will be published in the ongoing Breitkopf critical edition (which has so far (as of 2016) reached symphonies 1-3 and 7- and many other works in his output.)
